   George F. Bowman

George F. Bowman, age 77, of Clearwater, farmer, retired Boeing employee, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2008.  George Franklin Bowman was born on September 2, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the youngest of four children born to Purl F. and Elaine Frieda (Ruter) Bowman. Growing up in a strong, loving Christian environment, Gerald, Louise, John and George were raised on a farm west of Derby, Kansas.

George received his elementary education at Pleasant Valley School district 35. This small red-brick, rural school was located just one mile north of his farm home, where it still remains to this day. He graduated from Derby High School in 1948 and then attended two years at Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS. During his high school and college years, he was active in band, trumpet trio, football, 4-H Club, and Baptist Youth Fellowship.

George was a longtime Christian believer who faithfully attended the First Baptist Church of Derby with his entire family. In 1942, at the age of 12, he was baptized by the Rev. Virgil F. Young.

On October 9, 1952, George was united in marriage to Marvella Hildebrand in the First Baptist Church of Derby. They moved to the Bowman Family farm three miles north of Clearwater to begin their married life in the business of farming. To this fifty-year union were born three children: Sherry, Lydia, and Brad.

Together, George and Marvella actively raised their family in the Clearwater First Baptist Church, instilling in them the value of serving the Lord Jesus Christ and following in His path of righteousness. As a lifelong active member, he lovingly served his church as a Deacon, trustee, missionary board member, and willingly volunteered for opportunities to serve others.

George served on the Board of Directors for Sedgwick County Farm Bureau for four years. In 2002, George and Marvella were awarded the Kansas Farm Bureau Century Farm Award in recognition of more than 100 years of family farm ownership.

To help supplement the farm income, George worked at Boeing Aircraft company for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1993. During the early 1970’s, after considerable prayer, the Bowman family built “The Mustard Seed” restaurant located north of the Clearwater city limits. They owned and operated this Biblically named business from 1973 to 1978.

For George, community outreach and sharing the message of God’s love was of key importance. He was an active member of the Clearwater Lion’s Club, and Unity Masonic Lodge 273 of Clearwater, having served as a Master in 1998. In 2003, he was recognized for being a Fifty-year Masonic Fraternity Member.

George loved antique tractors and his family would jokingly call him the “walking tractor encyclopedia!” He could quickly recall and accurately relate the details of various tractor types, models, and specifications. He was especially fond of Minneapolis-Moline models. He took pride in participating at various antique tractor shows throughout Kansas and Oklahoma – winning ribbons and trophies for his restored tractors. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter.

George was a man of strong conviction and Christian faith. His life not only displayed a testimony for the Lord but sets forth a Godly challenge and example for us to follow today. He said, “Faith is what keeps me pointed in the right direction, with faith I’m able to travel on.”

Services were held 1pm, Saturday, February 2, 2008, at First Baptist Church, Clearwater. Interment was in Clearwater Cemetery. Memorials have been established with First Baptist Church Building Fund, 306 E. Ross, Clearwater, KS 67026 or Unity Lodge #273 A.F. & A.M., P.O. Box 304, Clearwater, KS 67026.

He will be deeply missed by his three children: Dr. Sherry Bowman-Kragh of Clearwater, Lydia Gates and husband, Jim, of Cedar Point, KS, Brad Bowman and wife, Teresa, of Clearwater; brother, Gerald Bowman of Derby; grandchildren, Kendra Kragh-Raymer, Krista Kragh, Tanner, Tate, and Trevor Bowman; great-grandson, Lance Kragh; nieces and nephews and a host of many friends.
